Covid-19 impact: China to ban breeding of 45 wild species

The Government of China is reportedly planning to ban the artificial breeding of 45 wild animal species in a bid to minimise the risk of zoonotic diseases after the Covid-19 outbreak. China banned the consumption of wild animals in the country soon after the pandemic started.

Mosa Meat to expand cultured meat production facility

Dutch food technology company Mosa Meat has raised $55m in a Series B funding round to expand its cultured meat production facility in Maastricht. The round was led by Luxembourg-based Blue Horizon Ventures and joined by investors such as Bell Food Group, M Ventures and other mission-based investors and advisers.

Nestlé USA commits to net-zero carbon emission by 2050

Nestlé USA has extended its support for the Net Zero Initiative, unveiled by the Innovation Center for US Dairy.

Net Zero Initiative aims to help US dairy farms implement new technologies and adopt economically viable practices to achieve carbon neutrality, optimised water usage and improved water quality by 2050. 

Nestlé is the first company to join the Net Zero Initiative and also agreed to offer its expertise to help propel the entire industry’s progress toward a more sustainable future.

UK’s 2 Sisters Food Group has agreed to divest a portion of its Fox’s Biscuits business to a Ferrero-related firm for £246m. Part of the aquisition includes the manufacturing facilities in Batley and Kirkham that produce biscuits for Fox’s.

UK plant-based meat alternatives maker Meatless Farm has raised $31m in a new funding round to support global expansion. The brand will use the capital to expand its presence in existing and new markets in the UK, Europe, Asia and the US.

€800m

Global bioscience company Chr Hansen has finalised an agreement to divest Natural Colors,  its food-colouring business, to EQT IX Fund in an €800m deal. Natural Colors is engaged in the production of natural colouring ingredients using all-natural fruit and vegetable concentrates such as sweet potatoes, grape skin, spirulina, carrots and beetroots, which are used by the food and beverages manufacturers.

Pressure increases for Chinese food manufacturers following Covid-19

A new report from Lloyd’s Register shows that 76% of consumers in China have changed their food shopping or consumption habits in the last 12 months, with 87% more concerned about food safety now compared to a year ago.
